David Stephenson is a well known Australian photographer who has had many exhibitions overseas. He studied in Tasmania as well as Colorado & Mexico. His work is exhibited in some Australian top art galleries as well as overseas. He is the head of Photography at the University of Tasmania.
What hits me about his work is that on the whole it is peaceful. His most recent work are city images at night, but it is his earlier work that appeals to me. He did a series called Dusk to Dawn which along with the stars moving, he shows sunrise & sunset. Very simple.
In the early 1990s he visited the Antarctic. There is very little in these images – just white texture, but nevertheless they are beautiful.
He often places images side by side as in this Tasmania one – a panorama without joining them.
A book he wrote recently was called 'Visions of heaven' and it was images of spectacular domes in holy places such as below.
