JACKIE RANKIN – Photographer

JACKIE RANKIN – Photographer

Jackie Ranken is an art photographer based in Queenstown in New Zealand. Originally from Goulburn in NSW, she is very accomplished and has won numerous awards including AIPP landscape photographer of the year three times and is a master photographer multiple times in both Australia and New Zealand.

When she lived in Goulburn she was one of the early photographers who shot aerial landscapes – abstract landscapes. What is amazing is that she attached herself to the top of her father’s aircraft and as he looped the plane she shot her images. This was because the wing obstructed her view from the cabin. Goulburn was in drought at the time & she wanted to record it. These photos resulted in a book called Aerial abstracts published in 2004. She has been awarded many prizes for this book.

The images are just what I see in a landscape – abstract patterns. Ranken talks of her ‘natural affinity for textures, lines and shapes’. She works in black and white – originally in film but now digitally and she particularly likes the flexibility with that papers that are available to print on. As an art photographer the final black and white image on beautiful paper is what she is after.

These are some of her work:
